Romans 13:1
- “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities.” Everyone—including believers—is called to respect lawful authority. Ordinarily, this includes obeying laws, paying taxes, and fulfilling our responsibilities as citizens.
- “For there is no authority except from God.” God is the highest authority. Human rulers have limited authority under Him; they do not stand above Him.
- “The authorities that exist are appointed by God.” Governments operate under God’s sovereignty. This does not mean that God approves of every ruler’s character, decision, or action. Rulers themselves remain accountable to God.
Does this mean we must obey a government when it commands us to sin? No. When human commands conflict with God’s commands, our obedience belongs first to God. In Acts 5:29, Peter and the apostles said, “We ought to obey God rather than men” (KJV). Daniel likewise continued praying when a royal decree prohibited it (Daniel 6:10).
Respecting authority also allows us to speak against injustice, seek lawful change, and hold leaders accountable.
The lesson is this: Honor governing authority, but give your highest allegiance to God. We respect the office without treating the person who holds it as infallible.
Closing prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word. Teach us to honor You in our public responsibilities, our relationships, and our private lives. Give us discernment to respect authority while remaining faithful to Your commands. Help us fulfill our obligations and love our neighbors sincerely.
Awaken us wherever we have become careless. Reveal the works of darkness we need to cast off, including jealousy, strife, and hidden sin. By Your Spirit, strengthen us to put on the Lord Jesus Christ and refuse opportunities that feed sinful desires. May our conduct reflect Your truth and grace as we await our Savior. In Jesus’ name, amen.
