Walk With God, Obey His Voice, and Hold Fast to Him

Deuteronomy 13:4 (NKJV)

“You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.

Our relationship with God requires more than simply believing that He exists. It requires walking with Him, listening to Him, obeying Him, serving Him, and remaining faithful to Him.

Moses was reminding the children of Israel that they must never allow false teachings, deceptive voices, or the attractions of this world to turn their hearts away from the living God.

Notice the six instructions God gives His people:

  1. Walk after the LORD: Let God direct your footsteps and guide your daily decisions.
  2. Fear Him: Honor God with reverence, respect, and a sincere desire to please Him.
  3. Keep His commandments: God’s Word is not merely something to read; it is something to live.
  4. Obey His voice: When God speaks through His Word, respond with faith and obedience.
  5. Serve Him: Demonstrate your love for God through service, compassion, and faithfulness.
  6. Hold fast to Him: No matter what difficulties arise, refuse to let go of your relationship with the Lord.

A Thought to Carry With You Today:

Walking with God is a daily commitment. Obeying His voice is an expression of love. Holding fast to Him is evidence of enduring faith.

1. What Is a Deceptive Voice?

A deceptive voice does not always sound evil. Sometimes it sounds pleasant, reasonable, loving, and even spiritual.

It may use Scripture, speak about God, or promise something wonderful. However, its message may contradict God’s Word.

The danger of deception is that a person can believe they are following truth while actually being led away from it.

Jesus warned us in Matthew 24:24 (NKJV) that false christs and false prophets would arise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

2. How Does a Deceptive Voice Work?

Consider these five ways deception operates.

First: It questions what God has already said.

In Genesis 3:1, the serpent approached Eve with a question about God’s command.

The serpent began by creating doubt about God’s Word. This opened the door to deception.

Second: It mixes truth with falsehood.

A deceptive teacher may tell you nine things that are true and then introduce one false teaching.

Because the listener has already accepted the truthful statements, the false teaching may be accepted without careful examination.

Third: It appeals to our desires.

In Genesis 3:6, Eve saw that the forbidden fruit was desirable.

Deception often appeals to something we want—power, recognition, financial gain, acceptance, or immediate satisfaction.

Fourth: It uses spiritual authority to gain trust.

A person may claim, “God told me to tell you something.”

But claiming to speak for God does not automatically mean the message comes from God.

First John 4:1 tells believers not to believe every spirit but to test the spirits to determine whether they are of God.

Fifth: It gradually leads people away from obedience.

Deception does not always demand that someone abandon God immediately.

It may begin with small compromises until disobedience becomes acceptable.

3. How Can We Recognize a Deceptive Voice?

God’s TruthA Deceptive Message
Agrees with ScriptureTwists or contradicts Scripture
Encourages obedienceJustifies disobedience
Points people toward ChristExalts a person above Christ
Welcomes honest examinationPressures people not to question
Produces humility and integrityEncourages manipulation or selfish gain

We must also remember that not every mistaken teaching, uncomfortable feeling, or disagreement is deliberate deception. We need wisdom, patience, and careful examination.

4. Why Is Deuteronomy 13 So Important?

Here is something especially significant about the chapter you shared this morning.

In Deuteronomy 13:1–3, Moses warns that even if someone gives a sign or wonder that comes to pass, God’s people must not follow that person if the person encourages them to worship other gods.

In other words, a supernatural experience does not automatically prove that a message comes from God.

The message must be tested against what God has already revealed.

That is why verse 4 commands us to walk after the Lord, fear Him, obey His voice, serve Him, and hold fast to Him.

5. How Do We Protect Ourselves?

Jesus gives us an important principle in John 10:27 (NKJV):

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

We learn to discern God’s truth by studying Scripture, praying for wisdom, examining teachings carefully, and remaining accountable to mature believers.

And remember what Jesus said in John 8:31–32: continuing in His Word is connected to knowing the truth, and the truth makes us free.

One Final Thought for Our Morning Meditation

A deceptive voice often begins by making us question God’s truth, while the voice of the Good Shepherd calls us back to His Word.

Here is a question worth considering:

When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he actually quoted Scripture (Matthew 4:5–6). Jesus answered by correctly applying Scripture (Matthew 4:7).

That teaches us something powerful: Even the words of the Bible can be misused to support deception when they are taken out of their proper context.

And this is why 2 Timothy 2:15 is so important: we must rightly divide the Word of truth.
