His Mercy Makes Me Want to Learn His Ways

Psalm 119:64

“The earth, O LORD, is full of Your mercy; Teach me Your statutes.” — Psalm 119:64, NKJV

Psalm 119:64 brings together two powerful truths: God’s mercy and God’s statutes.

The Hebrew word translated “statutes” is ḥuqqeḵā, from ḥoq. It refers to something prescribed, established, appointed, or decreed. In other words, God’s statutes are not casual suggestions. They are His established instructions—His way of teaching us how He desires us to live.

But notice what comes before the request to be taught:

“The earth, O LORD, is full of Your mercy.”

The psalmist first recognizes the mercy of God, and then he cries, “Teach me.”

That order is important.

When we begin to recognize how merciful God has been to us, something changes within our hearts. We no longer want merely what God can give us; we begin to want to know God Himself and how He wants us to live.

God has shown us mercy when we understood Him, and He showed us mercy when we did not understand.

He showed us mercy when we obeyed Him correctly, and He showed us mercy while we were still learning how to obey.

There are times when we sincerely desire to please God, yet we try to accomplish His will through our own understanding, our own strength, or our own methods. But as we mature spiritually, we begin to pray differently:

“Lord, I don’t just want to do a good thing. I want to do it Your way. Teach me Your statutes.”

That is spiritual growth.

The Hebrew expression translated “teach me” comes from lamad, meaning to learn or to be trained. The psalmist is asking God not merely for information, but for instruction that will shape his life.

The longer we walk with God, the more we can look back and recognize:

It was His mercy that carried me.
It was His mercy that corrected me.
It was His mercy that gave me another opportunity.
It was His mercy that allowed me time to grow.

And when you understand that kind of mercy, your heart begins to say:

“Lord, after everything You have done for me, I want to know Your ways. Teach me what You have established. Teach me how You want me to live.”

Mercy does not make us careless about obedience.

True understanding of mercy creates a greater desire for obedience.

We do not seek His statutes because we are trying to earn His mercy. We seek His statutes because we have experienced His mercy.

His mercy produces gratitude.
Gratitude produces love.
Love produces a desire to know Him.
And knowing Him produces the prayer:

“Teach me Your statutes.”

So today our prayer is simple:

Father, the earth is full of Your mercy, and my life is evidence of Your mercy. Because You have loved me, carried me, forgiven me, and patiently taught me through the years, create within me an even greater desire to know Your ways. Do not allow me simply to do what seems right to me. Teach me what You have established, and help me to walk in it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The more I understand God’s mercy, the more I desire to be taught God’s ways.
